Session 5 Financial & Material Abuse

  • 3 Steps

About

Session 5 explores financial and material abuse—how money, work, benefits, housing, possessions, technology, and everyday resources can be used to control, punish, or trap someone. This session is for men, women, and young people, including survivors and those who recognise they’ve used harmful or controlling behaviours. You’ll learn to spot common tactics (like restricting access to money, creating debt, taking wages/benefits, damaging property, withholding essentials, or using “help” as leverage), understand the impact on safety and wellbeing, and identify early warning signs. We also look at healthy alternatives—fair decision-making, respect for boundaries, accountability, and practical steps to rebuild safety, stability, and independence. This is an educational, supportive session with clear boundaries and a focus on change, safety, and recovery.
